New Hanover County Library has been used in many many films and television series. From Dawson's Creek to more recent The Remaining, soon to be in theaters later this year, 2014.

Ashley High School may look familiar if you have seen the HBO TV Series, Eastbound and Down. The high school was used in 3 of the four seasons of the series and stands a chance of being used again if the show returns for another season(?). Stay tuned.

This is a new location for me. Located in Carolina Beach State Park, in Carolina Beach, NC the park has been host to several film productions in the past. Most recently I worked on "We're the Miller's" which used the Campgrounds for the camp-out family Pictionary Game scenes.

Pictured below, Sugar Loaf, is the highest point in New Hanover County. Used as an encampment during the Civil War, is sits approx. a mile off the parks main road. Only accessible by foot and ATV to the public, this is a great place to go for a change of scenery and a little tranquility. 

Sutton Lake Road, leads to Sutton Lake. The lakes serve as the cooling lakes for the Duke-Progress Energy Power Plant located in Brunswick County, NC. This is the closets look you can find around here to double as Mexico. On WtM, we needed to film in the desert scenes. Unable to find a location with the exact desert look the production was going for, they moved to New Mexico to complete the filming. Somethings just cannot be mistaken for the real thing.

The Murchison Building, one of Wilmington the most historic buildings has a very convenient tunnel located in its courtyard. It has been used by countless productions for its urban look and it ability to cut into another location. Personally, I love the look of this location. Turn your head and you are transported to a major metropolitan city.

Yesterday I scouted several locations around, Wilmington, NC. Some for the first time and others for the umpteenth time. I don't mind. It's interesting to see how places age, decay over time, plants mature, structures are updated. Its progress and demise, happening all around us, all time.

I think my most enjoyable part of the Scouting job for me is meeting the new people and the interesting places and stories they tell me. A local historian and preservationist  was informing me about the Artesian Sewer channels that were built in Wilmington upon the first construction of the town. The City of Wilmington was once only spanning the distance of 10 blocks by 5 blocks. The tunnels, approx. 6 of them, run from 5th St. to the Cape Fear River. They were primarily used for sewage but also may have been used as an emergency exit for the whites, if a race riot were to break out. Race riots were a common thing in Wilmington and much info is available on line and at your local library if more interest and study is required.

Today, I plan on visiting the North Carolina Room at the New Hanover County Public Library to research locations for Sleepy Hollow and to find the locations of these, Artesian Tunnels.

I've been working in the Location Department for several years now. Finally able to do so calmly and collectively I've decided to share my adventures with you via a blog. I think many might find this very interesting as I tend to gain access to places not seen by the average person. These locations usually excite me, when I find a new one and when I see it transformed into a film set. At times I'll try to post before, during, and after photos to keep you up-to-date on how things look through our process and also to show you new findings i gather on my journey.
